Online magazine 'Valley of Llamas' | Q&A

- What type of typographic system is being used and what is the designer trying to do with it?

The typographic system used throughout the magazine and especially this article is very difficult because it contains lots of graphic content which means many variations are used concerning the layout of the page and the placement of text and images, number of columns, etc.

- How many typefaces are used and what are they being used to denote? (Find out what they are)

Taking only a quick look at this particular article it may seem that there might be quite a few typefaces being used when, in fact, there are only two. The first one (I believe, LFT Etica typeface) is being used for the headings, credits, quotes, and photo commentary when the other one (Minion Pro) is used for the interview (main text) which repeats throughout the whole magazine.

- Is there evidence of a grid being used?

A grid was used for some of the pages of the article, especially those where the main text is split into two columns in which the lines are perfectly aligned and the text is justified. Both columns start and end at the same height, the linespacing in both of the columns is the same. Additionally, the text is aligned with the pictures which makes it another proof of the grid being used in the layout of the spread.

- What size do you think the type is?

I believe that the main text is approximately 12pt whereas the title is about 36pt.

- Do you think this is the correct size? Is it legible?

Being an online magazine, it is pretty hard to decide whether the sizing is good or bad because you can always zoom in/out while reading it. However, I think that the designer has done a good job and the text is easily readable and there is no particular problem with the legibility.

- Is the use of typography suitable for the type of publication that you have been given and why?

The typography is used in the correct way and is suitable for the article. The sans-serif LFT Etica typeface used for the title is very simplistic yet has a few distinctive & playful characters such as ‘K’ or ‘C’.

- Is the text justified, range left, range right, or centered? How are paragraphs split up?

The text is justified, in most pages divided by two columns and the paragraphs are split up by leaving a blank space between them.

- Do all lines of text align with each other?

All of the lines in the text align (both the line length in one column and two)

- What colors are used within the design?

The page color is white and text is set in black as per usual, the only colors used throughout the article are from the pictures.

- What type of paper is the publication printed on?

It is an online magazine.

- If your publication is digital or a website, what features make this interesting?

The magazine owns a website in which you can find every month’s issues. Speaking about the digital magazine, it is very different compared to Lithuanian press and publications because it has that minimalistic, Scandinavian style to it. The color palette is very white, simplistic yet seasoned with a splash of color from its graphic content. I wouldn’t say there is much to say about the layout, it is very ordinary but easily readable and pleasant to the eye.

- Overall, how successful do you think the layout is?

The layout, in my eyes, is done very precisely. Everything is consistent and great-looking. Even just flipping through the pages makes you feel at ease because the layout is very clean and light.

- What are two other aspects that make this layout great?

Graphic content is crucial for a design/fashion/interior related magazine. This certain magazine has done a perfect job incorporating the images with the context – they are professionally done, edited and their scaling just complements the text making it a whole unit.

Another nice detail is the quoting (the quote is put in all caps, bolded and sized up) that is incorporated in the layout of the main text which gives it a little break from the longer text and emphasizes the certain parts of the article.
